Meet the best lightning sensor for research or risk management

Outstanding detection efficiency

Detects more than 95% of cloud-to-ground strikes and more than 85% of intracloud lightning flashes.

Industry-leading measurement range

Provides 20x the broad frequency range of a standard sensor, significantly increasing detection capabilities.

Remote configuration and management

Firmware and configuration management via remote software simplifies ownership and maintenance.

How we can help

AEM is the industry leader in lightning detection and monitoring. Our Earth Networks Total Lightning Network® and AEM Elements™ Resiliency Platform provide the hardware, software, and expertise community and business leaders need to protect people and infrastructure.

MAXIMUM ACCURACY

Scientific-grade lightning detection

Communities around the world rely on the AEM to protect their homes, businesses, and economies from the impacts of severe weather. That’s why we’re continuously developing our lightning detection sensor and network to provide the most powerful, accurate information possible.

OUTSTANDING DURABILITY

Built tough for extreme conditions

Plenty of sensors can observe extreme conditions for a short time, but can they stand up to long deployments with howling winds, severe temperatures, and accumulating ice? The AEM lightning sensor is built to operate from -40°C to +85°C in winds up to 216 km/hr while withstanding up to 2.5 cm of ice.

EASY TO DEPLOY AND OPERATE

Streamlined footprint and power management

Our lightning sensor weighs just under 10kg and consumes just 15 watts when it operates, meaning it has an electrical impact equivalent to an LED lightbulb. It uses Power over Ethernet (PoE), making it more reliable, simpler to install, easier to troubleshoot, and ready for future upgrades.

FAQs

Our lightning sensor’s measurement range is 20km – 400km with an accuracy of <100 meters. That means it can pinpoint a lightning strike nearly 250 miles away to an area with a radius less than two and a half football fields.

Our lightning sensor is designed to be mast-mounted and weighs less than 6kg, including the digital signal processor (DSP) and 60m data cable. When installed correctly, it will operate in winds up to 216 km/h and withstand up to 2.5cm of ice.

The data from an AEM lightning sensor is best viewed within our AEM Elements 360 or Sferic Maps® application. From there, your data can be exported in a variety of sharable formats.

Our sensor’s mean time to failure is 10 years, offering a decade of reliable, continuous remote lightning monitoring.
